Orig. 1962

Sacha Distel — 7" 45 rpm · Edition of 300, black vinyl, 4-colour sleeve

La belle vie / The Good Life

b/w Mon beau chapeau

Our debut. Distel's 1962 reading of Sacha's own composition — known internationally as 'The Good Life' — re-cut from a clean French original. The B-side, 'Mon beau chapeau', is a 1963 light-jazz curiosity we couldn't leave behind.

Brigitte Bardot — 7" 45 rpm · Edition of 400, cream sleeve, foil-stamped

La madrague / The Boat House

b/w Tu veux ou tu veux pas

Bardot's 1963 Saint-Tropez postcard, set to music by Jean-Max Rivière. Originally an album cut on her self-titled Philips LP, now finally on a 7-inch the size it always should have been. B-side: the 1970 Marcel Zanini cover she made hers.

Pink Martini ft. China Forbes — 7" 45 rpm · Edition of 500

Sympathique / (Je ne veux pas travailler)

b/w Que sera, sera

The Portland 'little orchestra' has never properly been on a single. Lauderdale and Forbes gave us their blessing to press one — A-side, the song; B-side, the Doris Day standard they refuse to drop from their setlist.

Petite fleur

b/w La vie en rose

From Barber's 2013 record 'Chansons', a Vancouver-via-Hamilton reading of Sidney Bechet's 1952 standard. Two minutes forty-three seconds of pure cool. B-side, the obvious one, recorded for the same session.

Sous le ciel de Paris / Under the Paris Sky

b/w Les feuilles mortes

Montand's canonical 1951 take from the Hubert Giraud film of the same name. The B-side is the Jacques Prévert lyric every French singer eventually records — but Montand recorded it first, in 1946, with Cosma at the piano.

From Coralie's 2001 debut produced by her brother Benjamin Biolay. A song about love and ambivalence and the gap between them, on a label that mostly puts out songs about love and ambivalence and the gap between them.

Un jour comme un autre / A Day Like Any Other

b/w Bubble Gum

Side two of the Bardot story on Pica: the 1994 'Bubble Gum' record, made thirty years after she stopped acting. Heavier, more knowing, less Saint-Tropez. The title track on the B-side.

Jardin d'hiver / Winter Garden

b/w Jazz Méditerranée

The Keren Ann–Benjamin Biolay co-write that gave Salvador his last great record at age 83. From 'Chambre avec vue' (2000) — a bossa-nova that should not have worked and worked anyway.
